The existing mid-century modern house was transformed from a dark, low slung assemblage with a constricted floor plan into an open, sun-filled home for a modern lifestyle. The existing low pitch roof slopes are extended to span the entire width, creating airy central spaces at the core of the warm and alluring family home. Staying true to the mid century design premise, the classic California indoor-outdoor spaces are enhanced and expanded toward both the front and back, offering ample opportunity for enjoyment of the temperate climate.
The home is experienced as a series of distinct and inviting spaces, entering through a central garden courtyard, protected by the long roof overhangs preserved from the original structure and supplemented with an arbor screening the direct sun, passing through the natural douglas fir front door into an unexpectedly bright and spacious entry and great room. Through large windows and skylights, balanced natural light permeates throughout the house, together with natural finishes, inspire feelings of calm and repose.
